Our Favourite Low-Light Plants
Greener corners, even without the sunshine
Not every home is blessed with big, sunny windows – and that’s perfectly fine. There are plenty of beautiful indoor plants that thrive in low-light environments. Whether you’ve got a north-facing flat or a room that just doesn’t get much sun, you don’t have to miss out on the joy of greenery.
At Plant Haus, we’re big believers that there’s a plant for every space. Here are a few of our go-to favourites for dimmer corners, shaded shelves, and cosy hallways.
1. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
Known for its glossy, dark green leaves and near indestructibility, the ZZ Plant is ideal for beginners. It handles neglect with grace and only needs watering occasionally. It prefers bright, indirect light, but will tolerate low-light areas better than most.
2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, the Snake Plant is one of the toughest houseplants around. It copes well with infrequent watering and low light. Its upright structure adds height and shape to any room, making it as decorative as it is functional.
3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Pothos is a trailing beauty that’s perfect for shelves, hanging planters, or climbing up supports. It’s fast-growing, forgiving, and can thrive in everything from low light to fluorescent-lit offices. Just don’t let it sit in soggy soil.
4. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
The Peace Lily is both elegant and practical. It’s known for its air-purifying qualities and tolerance of low light. While it may flower less in the shade, it still adds a lush, tropical feel to darker spaces.
5. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)
True to its name, the Cast Iron Plant is practically unkillable. It’s perfect for corners that get little to no sunlight and thrives on minimal care. Its deep green leaves have a classic, architectural look that suits most interiors.
Tips for Success in Low Light
- Water less often – lower light means slower growth.
- Dust leaves regularly to help them absorb what light they do get.
- Rotate your plants occasionally to keep them growing evenly.
You Don’t Need the Sun to Go Green
Low-light doesn’t mean low-impact. These adaptable plants bring just as much calm, beauty, and wellbeing into your space as their sun-loving counterparts. Whether you're greening up a hallway, a shaded office, or your bedroom, there’s something on this list to suit.
